A statistical approach to control particle size of poly(acrylic acid) stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles

Abstract:
Polymer-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are interest of wide range of applications from magnetic recording to biomedical applications. Size control, stability and surface functionalization of the nanoparticles are the key issues in the field. Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) provides numerous advantages as a coating material for stabilization and a surface functionalization. It is biocompatible, functional, pH responsive and carboxylic acid moieties have high affinity for the iron oxide crystal surface. Preparation of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles from iron salts in aqueous solutions with in situ PAA coating will be discussed. Particle size (core and hydrodynamic), size distribution, short and long term stability (resistance to agglomeration), particle composition, saturation magnetization of the prepared particles will be correlated to the variables such as PAA molecular weight, reactive/iron mole ratio, iron and base concentrations. pH response of the particles and cell uptake behavior will also be discussed.
