Abstract:
High performance fibers and nanocomposites have the potential to improve the sustainability and survivability of mounted and dismounted Soldiers. Photovoltaic fibers, nanofiber reinforced composites, and nanoparticle coatings are being developed to provide renewable power in the field, create better impact resistant materials and improve the durability of fielded equipment. The Natick Soldier Center (NSC) is also initiating a High Performance Fiber Center of Excellence (HPFCOE) to provide the infrastructure and expertise to produce bi/tricomponent fibers for applications where sheath/core, side-by-side, segmented pie or islands in the sea fiber cross sections can provide increased durability, reactivity and strength. This presentation will highlight NSC’s nanocomposite program and will provide information on how academia and industry can partner with NSC under the HPFCOE in the future.
