Polarization Anisotropy and Frequency Dependence of Emission from Aligned CdSe Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:
Positive AC dielectrophoresis (DEP) and Electrospray of nanowire/polymer mixture are used to align CdSe nanowires (NWs) near patterned micro-electrodes. The degree and structure of alignment is a function of the AC electric field frequency. The alignment sensitively affects the fluorescence properties of the nanowires, revealing a high degree of polarization anisotropy in the absorption. An unexpected outcome is a reversible, order-of-magnitude, field-induced and AC frequency-dependent enhancement of the nanowire emission. This behavior contrasts to the general expectation that electric fields will quench the NW emission rather than enhance it due to the reduced spatial overlap between electron and hole wave functions. Such field-enhanced and frequency-dependent emission in NWs aligned by patterned electrodes has potential applications in display, optical switches and sensing technologies.
