Chopping SWNTs into pieces: New Strategies for Cutting Carbon Nanotubes

U. Rauwald, K.J. Ziegler, H.K. Schmidt, R.H. Hauge and R.E. Smalley

Keywords:
carbon nanotubes, cutting, short SWNTs

Abstract:
The authors present current methods for cutting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Short nanotubes receive increasing interest because their unique properties make them suitable for a large variety of applications in material science and electronics. Recent strategies have involved the use of an electron beam to cut SWNTs. We describe our newly developed cutting strategies to achieve bulk quantities of short SWNTs.
