Early recognition of potential biological, chemical and explosive threats continues to play a dominant role in our nations’ struggle for global security. The organic compounds that indicate the presence of an explosive or chemical threat are currently very difficult to detect and differentiate in a discreet manner. There is a critical need for inexpensive and unobtrusive chemical and explosives detection devices capable of determining the concentration, location and source of a variety of biological and chemical contaminants. To be as effective as possible and keep social disruption to a minimum, the next generation of devices must also signifcantly reduce the footprint, visibility and pricepoint of explosives/chemical detection. This presentation will focus on the detection technology and approach developed by Owlstone Nanotech, a subsidiary of Advance Nanotech. Owlstone’s technology includes a revolutionary micro-machined gas sensor which, with its associated electronics and software, provides an analytical instrument on a chip, programmable for a range of analytes. The Owlstone Sensors are deployed discreetly across a geographic area to silently detect the source, location and concentration of chemical and explosives threats. The technology holds significant promise for the cost-effective detection of volatile organic compounds ranging from saran gases to pre-combustion fire indicators.
