Cubic or monoclinic Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles by flame spray pyrolysis

Abstract:
Continuous, single-step synthesis of cubic monocrystalline Y2O3:Eu3+ nanophosphor particles (10 -20 nm in grain diameter) is achieved by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). The effect of FSP process parameters on product particle characteristics was investigated by XRD, BET and TEM. The optical performance of these particles was measured by time-resolved photoluminescent emission at 611 nm (254 nm excitation) Pure monoclinic or cubic Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles are formed without post-treatment by controlling the FSP parameters that affect the high temperature particle residence time. Cubic Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles exhibited longer decay times but lower maximum photoluminescent intensity than commercial micron-sized bulk Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor powder. The influence of particle size on these optical properties is examined with sintered monoclinic particles for at 900°C to 1300°C resulting in particle diameters 0.060 - 1 µm (Chem. Phys.
