Electrophoretic Transport of Proteins in Microchannels Filled with Immiscible Aqueous Phases

Abstract:
We report on experiments with a novel setup for two-phase electrophoresis consisting of a microchannel in which a phase boundary is formed, and electrodes integrated into the channel allowing to create an electric field perpendicular to the liquid lamellae. The experiments show that the bilaminated liquids exhibit a diode-like behavior with respect to electrophoretic transport. When the BSA molecules are introduced into the PEG rich phase, they can be transferred into the Dextran-rich phase via an applied electric field. In the reverse case, the interface between the liquids acts as a barrier, which the proteins are not able to penetrate for the range of field strengths studied.
