Abstract:
We have proposed Molecular Communication, a new and interdisciplinary research area that spans over the nanotechnology, biotechnology, and communication technology. Molecular communication allows nanomachines to communicate through the transport of molecules. Using molecular communication to control communication between nanomachines is inspired by the observation in biological systems that already commonly communicate through molecules. Since molecular communication devices can be made from biologically friendly materials, molecular communication may be especially suitable for a biological environment or biological device/machines in which current electrical communication can not be applied. Current related bionanotechnology focuses on observation of existing biological communication or applying limited molecular communication. In the paper, we focus specifically on the design of nano-scale communication systems through developing a molecular communication system using molecular motors and rail molecules for transport of information. The primary objective of this research is to determine the feasibility of self-organizing a rail molecule network as well as sending, propagation, and receiving of information molecules over the network. In order to examine the feasibility of the system, we have created a detailed model through survey of related work and are investigating the system through biological experiments and numerical simulations.
