Abstract: Nanoparticles of ZnO are increasingly being used as a pigment and UV absorber in personal care products (e.g. sunscreens), coatings and paints, predominantly because their absorbance efficiency increases with decreasing particle size. However, whilst protection against UV may be maintained at smaller particle sizes, the rate at which hydroxyl radicals are generated increases, due to the inherent photo-activity of these materials.
