Abstract: Field emission display (FED) based on carbon emitter has been in development for many years. Some researchers recognized early that carbon nanotube (CNT) field emitters were particularly suited for this display technology, especially for large area TVs (60 inches diagonal or larger) for home use. There are a number of reasons why carbon nanotube electron emitters are the perfect match for the large area flat TV format. First, if one studies the different display technologies as a function of the number of pixels and the diagonal size of the TV, one can easily observe that there is no technology available today to fulfill the dream of buying an affordable HDTV larger than 60 inches. CNT TVs possess the flatness and the thinness of PDPs and LCDs but are manufactured and operated like CRTs. Furthermore, PDPs and LCDs show deterioration of motion picture quality, such as dynamic false contour and blurring. The short response time of CNT TVs will result in a high quality motion picture, providing the same color quality as CRTs today. Finally, CNT TVs have by far a much higher luminous efficiency than both PDPs and LCDs and as a result they consume less power.
