Bio-assembly of Nanoparticles for Device Applications

Due to limitations of current lithographic methods, for future electronic device fabrication especially below 10 nm various methods are currently being investigated. To this end, in my research group, we assemble nanometer size particles with biological linkers both in 2-D and 3-D. Linkers such as peptides, nucleic acids and viruses are used to arrange pre-functionalized nanometer size particles into a desired heterogeneous arrangement. Chains of carbon nanotubes (CNT), CNT and quantum dot (QD) heterojunctions are successfully synthesized and their analytical characterization is accomplished by using Transmission electron microcopy, Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Highly controlled biological assembly can offer fabrication of heterogeneous nano components that can be part of an existing device. These nano components can be integrated using various “dropped-in” methods.
