Abstract: We present a novel contribution to the design of electrowetting microdevices (EWOD) by using an energy minimization approach. Altough the dynamics of motion of microdrops by electrowetting may be rapid, it is shown that, due to the very small size of the drops, inertia may be neglected for determining some characteristics behavior of drops in an EWOD device. With this approach, we analyze the physics of drop extraction from the inlet reservoir, drop motion, drop splitting and drop constraining from open to closed situation. Dimensionnal rules are derived. The results have been applied to design a new EWOD biochip.
