Fundamentals and Applications in Nano-Optics
Wolfgang Bacsa
Université Paul Sabatier
Sunday March 7, 4 pm
The aim of this course is to give an introduction to the emerging new field of Nano-optics, that is essentially optics in the sub-wavelength regime. Micro and Nanotechnology has made possible to control the surface structure of materials far below the optical wavelength limit. Optical fibers combined with the availability of scanning probe techniques to circumvent the diffraction limit opens the door to new opportunities to make use of a whole range of new phenomena. This short course is aimed at giving an overview of the different activities in this field and explaining the basic concepts in the context of recent applications. The following topics will be highlighted: wave optics, photonic crystals, enhanced optical emission and transmission, confocal microscopy, optical scanning probe techniques and optical tweezers.
