FLOW-3D®, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package from Flow Science, Inc., Santa Fe, New Mexico (www.flow3d.com), is a powerful, versatile program. With its large variety of physical models, FLOW-3D® users can simulate a wide range of physical phenomena associated with MEMS-scale problems. Laboratory experiments can be challenging to set up, costly to carry out, and difficult to replicate. Moreover, when dealing with MEMS-scale problems, where the dimensions are measured in microns, the ability to actually view the experimental results may be very limited. Experiments with FLOW-3D® are easy to set up and solutions to most free-surface flow problems are relatively fast—and there is no problem visualizing the results. Most important, numerical solutions with FLOW-3D® are remarkably accurate when compared to theoretical and experimental work. Especially for problems with discontinuous and rapidly varied flows, FLOW-3D® can provide accurate, reliable simulations.
