Biography:

J.G.E.M. Fraaije (Hans) is Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

His Inspiration:
We do not know what exactly is the difference between living and dead matter. Yet a precise quantitative measure of life would surely not only have important consequences for the percepetion of ourselves, but would also have many immediate practical applications in nanotechnology and molecular biology. The 19th century laws of heat and work were constructed for the optimization of engines and chemical factories; the 20th century law of uncertainty was constructed for optimization of signal processing in electronic machines. There is no doubt that the 21st century law of thermodynamics will be about communication in complex systems, whether artificial or natural. So, what is this new law? I do not know, but it is great fun trying to find out.
