Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications

Nanoparticles have distinctly different properties than bulk materials because the number of atoms or molecules on their surface is comparable to that inside the particles so that nanoparticles can be used to develop materials with unique properties. Some people even believe that nanoparticles constitute another state of matter! This lecture will start with a historic overview of gas phase synthesis of nanoparticles which is used for industrial manufacture of commodities. Then some of the current fundamental understanding of synthesis of nanoparticles will be highlighted focusing on manufacture of functional materials such catalysts, nanocomposites and even quantum dots.
