Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes by Decomposition of Hydrocarbon Using an Arc-Jet Plasma

Abstract:
We present a method to produce carbon nanotubes by decomposition of hydrocarbons using an arc-jet plasma of high temperature (500020000 K). Carbon nanotubes are continuously produced in a floating condition by introducing a hydrocarbon gas and a metal precursor into the arc-jet plasma. In this experimental work, argon and hydrogen are used as a plasma gas, nickel powder as a metal precursor, and methane as a carbon source. For the investigation of morphology, crystallization degree and purity of the carbon nanotubes in the soot produced under various processing conditions, we have performed the material analyses by using SEM, Raman spectroscopy and TGA. Since the suggested arc-jet plasma process is continuous and easily scalable, it is expected to be a promising technique for a large-scale commercial production of carbon nanotubes.
